Sunday, December 12th, 2010

Steampunk is a different type of clothing than most individuals are used to. You have to have a certain type of taste in order to enjoy the unique style of clothing that steampunk shows. Steampunk is mainly focused on the era where steam power was widely used. This means that individuals who enjoy dressing up in steampunk era clothing like the Victorian and aged look that came from famous characters including H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. However, you do not have to look like you are over a century old in order to be one of the hippest people around. Whether you are the type of person who loves those vintage wool coats or something more unique that fits your style, finding steampunk clothes is not difficult at all.

Steampunk is particularly popular with people from the gothic and punk subculture. There are a large number of people who are becoming more interested in steampunk culture and lifestyle. You do not have to be a goth or punk in order to become one of those who love the beautiful clothing that these styles have to offer. Victorian clothing is one of the most popular types of clothing for the steampunk generation. Neo-Victorian offerings might include corsets or wool jackets. Over 50% of steampunk is neo-Victorian in nature. Anyone who enjoys going against the authority and standards of society is going to enjoy the clothing that this type of society loves. There are no rules or guidelines whatsoever. It is all up to you to choose what type of clothing works for you. Suits with vests, coats, military garments and other types of clothing are famous for being associated with the steampunk culture and the world around it. When you are the type of person who loves being able to go back in history and be associated with the type of culture that steampunk becomes, you will find out just how much more informative and different the people that wear these types of clothes are.

One important thing to remember about this neo-Victorian type of lifestyle is that you need to have an open mind. There are thousands of people who are in the movement and are able to help guide you through the entire process. Becoming part of this revolution does not mean that you are unable to dress “normally” as well. You can be one of the type of people who blazes a type of culture that is all their own. Steampunk is a different type of culture because it is a sub culture of the entire United States. This culture takes you back to the time that steam was still in power. This retro look is increasingly cool with the fringe culture and there are thousands of people who dress under this type of look every day. Do not be one of those people that are not giving in, be your own person with your own style today. There are only a few hundred shops selling steampunk but give them your support in order to spread the movement!

Woman's Steampunk Costume

As every crafter’s favorite holiday approaches, Halloween, its time to start planning your steampunk costume for this year. There are a lot of mainstream outlets selling “steampunk” style costumes, but most of them are awful mainstream crap.

If you really want an authentic steampunk costume, consider buying some wares online from actual merchants to specialize in this and you get a completely unique and low-cost costume that will look worlds better than anything you could buy in a costume store. But perhaps the biggest benefit is that you are helping out the skilled crafters who try to make a living creating beautiful wares.

I highly recommend you take a peek right now at our steampunk clothing section and see if anything on eBay catches your fancy. Crafters typically ramp up production this time of year and there are a LOT of very interesting steampunk-style clothes available right now, from corsets and pants to boots and cufflinks.

Amazing Japanese steampunk watches finally for sale!

Friday, May 16th, 2008

A Japanese craftsman named Haruo Suekichi, has finally agreed to sell some of his fantastic steampunk watches that originally gained fame after a gallery of them was posted online last year. He’s selling two glorious steampunk men’s watches, and two steampunk women’s watches in a partnership with Chief magazine. Quite expensive at $1200 and $800 respectively but wow…seriously…wow.

One of the things that attracts me to steampunk (and I’m sure others as well) is the intricacies of the details. While the overall form is nice, the little steampunk refinements that he’s made to this such as the etched faces or the storage compartment are simply brilliant. What fan of steampunk doesn’t like little hidden compartments?!

While the price is a bit much for me personally, I think it reflects the quality of the workmanship. This isn’t something he pieced together in a weekend and the purchaser of such a fine work of art knows it. There’s definitely something to be said for wearing something that was hand-crafted and completely unique in the world.

Purchasing info and more pictures can be found here.  You can also read a fascinating interview with the craftsman here where he talks about his watches.
