Click the image to be taken to the listing. Last I checked it was in the $50’s with about a days left of time to vote. If you miss out on this auction though, the good news is that Geoffrey let me in on a little secret…he plans to make more of his crafts available to purchase! Also, don’t worry about buying from him, he has a 100% feedback rating.

Amazing Japanese steampunk watches finally for sale!

May 16th, 2008

A Japanese craftsman named Haruo Suekichi, has finally agreed to sell some of his fantastic steampunk watches that originally gained fame after a gallery of them was posted online last year. He’s selling two glorious steampunk men’s watches, and two steampunk women’s watches in a partnership with Chief magazine. Quite expensive at $1200 and $800 respectively but wow…seriously…wow.

One of the things that attracts me to steampunk (and I’m sure others as well) is the intricacies of the details. While the overall form is nice, the little steampunk refinements that he’s made to this such as the etched faces or the storage compartment are simply brilliant. What fan of steampunk doesn’t like little hidden compartments?!

While the price is a bit much for me personally, I think it reflects the quality of the workmanship. This isn’t something he pieced together in a weekend and the purchaser of such a fine work of art knows it. There’s definitely something to be said for wearing something that was hand-crafted and completely unique in the world.

Purchasing info and more pictures can be found here.  You can also read a fascinating interview with the craftsman here where he talks about his watches.

Robots crafted from junk.

Looks like Flickr user Lockwasher would be right at home in the steampunk community. Just look at the quality of these things! Simply gorgeous. Some of them have more of a steampunk feel than others but overall I’d consider the batch perfect for anybodies steampunk collection.

BuySteampunk.com featured on SteamFashion!

April 8th, 2008

Our friends over at SteamFashion have compiled a great list of steampunk clothing resources that is quite extensive.  The list features sites for those that are more of the DIY variety as well as those who prefer to purchase their clothing premade.

If you have any interest in steampunk fashion I highly recommend you give that list a gander although be warned, you will probably end up spending some money afterwards!

Contest: Win this LEGO Steampunk Mecha!

March 21st, 2008

***Contest Update***

Well, it looks like we may have a chance to relaunch this contest in the near future.  Stay tuned for our RSS feed for updates–the Kreigerhund might still be yours for the taking!

You’ve seen his work on BoingBoing, you’ve seen it on The Brother’s Brick, and even on Brass Goggles. Now you can win your very own custom-made “Kreigerhund” LEGO steampunk mecha direct from the craftsman himself (link goes to exclusive interview with Jamie).

Once you’ve finished drooling over the above image, you’ll find wondering how you can win this amazing steampunk artifact. Well, you see the Kreigerhund and its big brother the Dardenbahst are very three dimensional, and Jamie and I think there are a lot of talented artists out there who could create some fantastic 2D artwork incorporating one or both of these creations.

To that end, we are challenging all you artists out there to submit a single piece of art based off of these creations. After the submission period is over, I’ll post all of the submissions in a follow-up post with voting functionality and allow all of you to decide who should win the model. In addition, Jamie himself will be picking his favorite entry and the creator of that will receive a custom painted steampunk minifig!

In order to try to keep this as simple and fun as possible, there are only a few rules to follow.

Contest Rules

  1. Artwork can be illustrative or painterly, LEGO-inspired or a re-imagining of what the model(s) would be like as a real machine. You can also Photoshop something using the actual images of the models which Jamie has so kindly allowed, but the name of the game here is creativity. We want to see what these models look like through YOUR eyes. Remember, you can either do the Kreigerhund or Dardenbahst or incorporate both into the same image.
  2. Key dates/deadlines are as follows:
    • All artwork submissions must be received by *EDIT* Deadline TBD.
    • Once all submissions are in, Jamie will immediately select his favorite and we’ll announce the winner of the minifig.
    • The reader voting period will begin shortly after that and will last for two weeks. Exact dates will be given in the follow-up voting post, so be sure to subscribe to our RSS feed so you can be notified when voting has opened to check out all the cool work!
    • Winners will be announced the day after voting closes.
  3. Limit of one submission per person.
  4. We’ll be covering the costs of shipping for the model but we are not restricting this to the US…anybody in the world is welcome to enter!
  5. To keep things simple and manageable in terms of posting entries, and to allow us to print out all your cool art in all its greatness, all art must be submitted as an 8.5×11, 300dpi hi-res JPEG. All entries must be emailed to haltingpoint@gmail.com with the subject: “LEGO Steampunk Contest Submission”.
  6. Winners will be notified via email so please use a valid email address and make sure to add haltingpoint@gmail.com to your whitelist.
  7. A minimum of 5 entries must be received for the contest to continue to the voting phase.  During the first run we only received 2 entries and its kind of hard to have a contest without more.
  8. BE CREATIVE!

That about covers it. In terms of resources and inspiration to get you started, you can find some standalone images of each model with a white background through the links below.

Feel free to post any questions as comments in this thread or email me directly at haltingpoint@gmail.com. Also, the more entries the merrier so tell your friends, spread the word on your blogs and in forums, use the buttons below to Stumble us, Digg us, you name it!

And 3…2…1…GO!
